Do you know that when carrots are consumed raw, they release only 3% of beta carotene? On the other hand, cooked carrots which are pulped (like for creamy soup) release 39% of beta carotene. A powerful antioxidant known to fight cancer, beta carotene is metabolised in the body as Vitamin A in the presence of human bile salts. Besides antioxidants, carrots are a good source of minerals and fibre. All these help to build the immune system. Carrots are also a dietary source of phytoestrogens, weak estrogen mimics which can help to fill estrogen receptor sites which would otherwise be occupied by dangerous forms of estrogen which feed cancers such as breast cancer.

This recipe for carrot, celery, orange and coriander soup is a good way to get these carrot benefits into your body. Celery and coriander are also sources of apigenin, a natural aromatase inhibitor, while oranges are a source of naringenin, a natural aromatase inhibitor as well. In addition, oranges are a traditional source of Vitamin C, an antioxidant. If you’re dealing with an estrogen-driven health condition like breast cancer or endometriosis, this is one dish you should try out. Not only does it taste delicious, it can also be eaten chilled and it can even be frozen. How convenient is that?

For added antioxidant and cancer-fighting benefits, try adding turmeric.

Carrot, Celery, Orange & Coriander Soup
(4-6 servings)

Ingredients
1 kg carrots, washed, peeled and cut in chunks
2 stalks / ribs celery, washed and cut in chunks
3 shallots, peeled
1-2 garlic cloves
20 grams coriander, washed; reserve leaves for garnish
Juice and zest of 1 orange (reserve zest for garnish)
1 tsp white or black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1 litre water

Method
1. Wash, peel (where needed) and cut all vegetables.
2. Put all vegetables in a large stockpot with the water. Bring to boil then simmer till tender.
3. Add orange juice and stir.
4. Blend soup to your desired consistency. Add more water if needed. Season to taste.
5. Serve warm or chilled, garnished with coriander leavers and orange zest.

Whenever I need to clean a wound, open sores or ulcers, I start with home-made saline solution. It’s a gentle, natural solution which is useful for debridement, or removing dirt, debris, fluids, blood, pus and so on from damaged skin. Here’s a a really easy recipe for making your own saline solution (NOT to be used for eye or contact lens cleaning):

Ingredients:
1 cup boiled water
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Method:
1. Sterilise a glass jar and lid in boiling water. The jar should be large enough to hold one cup of water.
2. Pour one cup of freshly-boiled water into the glass jar. Add in one teaspoon of sea salt plus half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Stir throughly with a very clean metal spoon until the salt and soda are dissolved.
3. Cover the saline solution loosely with the jar lid and leave to cool.
4. Once cool, cap the jar securely and store in the fridge.
5. When the solution is required, pour a little into a separate, clean receptacle, like a bowl. NEVER dip your cotton directly into the main glass jar containing the saline solution.
6. Once the wound cleaning has been completed, pour away any saline solution remaining in the bowl. NEVER pour any residual solution back into the original glass jar.
7. Finish off the wound cleaning by using a clean piece of cotton to dab on a safe, gentle, non-toxic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial solution like Eliminator. Eliminator’s alcohol-free formula will help to protect the wound as well as deodorize it, reducing offensive odors.
8. Cover the wound with a suitable clean dressing. I like to use a healing salve made of aloe vera, seaweed powder and essential oils spread on clean gauze.

My dear hubby just made a batch of delicious home-brewed ginger ale. It’s the best I’ve ever had and beats all the commercial ginger ales hands-down. It’s really easy to make. Just chop up lots of fresh ginger root, bring it to the boil with some water, and simmer for a while. Let it cool sufficiently before straining. Add a sweetener like honey or sugar to the strained ginger juice to make a concentrated ginger cordial. Keep the cordial in the fridge until required.

You can dilute the ginger cordial with either cold or hot water to make a refreshing drink. To make fizzy ginger ale, dilute the ginger cordial with chilled club soda or soda water. Finish the drink soon after adding the soda, or the ale will go flat.

The fizzy ginger ale came in really handy during the recent festive season when I was feeling nauseous and bloated. At one stage, I even felt like throwing up. Just a few sips, and I felt much better. I could eat dinner shortly after. It struck me then that people experiencing nausea from chemotherapy for cancer might find relief in ginger ale. After all, studies have shown that ginger alleviates nausea, and is particularly helpful for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Ginger ale goes a step further in quickly relieving discomfort in the tummy.

Home-made ginger ale is best, but if you can’t make it yourself for some reason, make sure the ginger ale you buy contains the best ingredients possible, including real ginger. It makes a difference. When undergoing chemotherapy, always keep real ginger cordial and club soda or soda water handy in the fridge. It could save you some suffering.

The festive season is here. It’s time to look your best as you do the rounds of parties and catch up with friends and relatives. Here’s a simple trick to help you put on a winning smile, without burning a hole in your pocket. It may not produce the dazzling results that a dentist can, but I like the fact that it uses natural, safe ingredients. The less chemicals we expose ourselves to, the better.

Strawberry Teeth-Whitening Recipe
Ingredients:
1 ripe strawberry
1/2 teaspoon baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

Method:
1) Crush the strawberry to a pulp and mix in the baking soda.
2) Use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture unto your teeth. Leave on for 5 minutes.
3) Rinse off and brush thoroughly with a safe toothpaste like Neways Ultrashine Radiance to remove the strawberry-baking soda mix.

The active ingredient in strawberries which removes surface discoloration is malic acid, found in sour or tart fruits. Malic acid acts like an astringent. Baking soda combines with the strawberry to produce a natural tooth-cleanser, cleaning away stains from tea, coffee and so on.

The acid can damage the enamel on your teeth if you use this concoction too often, so don’t overdo it.

There are various ways to minimize these problems, such as by eating several small meals throughout the day rather than attempt to tackle two or three big meals. Eating before one feels hungry is also highly recommended. Nibbling on dry crackers, dry cereal and toast helps as well.

Ginger has traditionally been used by many cultures to treat nausea, and it has been observed that it significantly relieves nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Recently, I shared my recipe for a natural anti-cancer ‘tea’ which uses ingredients like ginger and turmeric. I have found that it also helps to counteract nausea. Here’s the link to the recipe. Ideally, start consuming it daily at least a day before you begin chemotherapy.

I’ve finally perfected my aloe vera and seaweed salve for wound dressing. Some months ago, I wrote about why aloe vera and seaweed, or agar-agar, make a great natural dressing for wounds and sores, including cancer tumors which have come to the surface. Agar-agar is obtainable from most Asian supermarkets and health food stores. You can read that post here. Here’s my recipe:

Ingredients
1 cup fresh aloe vera gel cubes
1 teaspoon agar-agar powder (fragrance and coloring free)
Rose hip or lavender oil
Mixing oil (if an oily salve is required for easier removal)

Method

Wash an aloe vera leaf. Cut away the tough green skin.

Cut the gel portion of the leaf into cubes, sufficient to fill two cups. I like to use a glass measuring jug, which can be put into the microwave.

Measure two level teaspoons of agar-agar powder. Set aside.

Place the aloe vera cubes into a blender. Blend until it becomes a liquid.

Pour a little of the aloe vera liquid back into the microwave-proof jug, enough to make a thick, smooth paste with the agar-agar powder. Stir until well-blended.

Add one-quarter of the aloe vera liquid into the paste, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.

Put the aloe vera and agar-agar powder mixture into the microwave. Microwave on high until it begins to boil. This step is essential because it helps the mixture to thicken and set. Be careful not to let it boil over.

Remove the jug from the microwave. Stir the mixture and then return it to the microwave. Bring it to boil again.

Remove the jug from the microwave and gradually pour in the remaining aloe vera liquid, stirring all the way. You should get a thick, syrupy consistency.

Set aside to cool. Stir every 10 minutes or so to prevent lumps from forming.

When fully-cooled, transfer to containers and keep in the fridge until required. The mixture will become a thick paste in the fridge.

Application
Rose hip and lavender essential oils are reputed to have healing properties. However, they do evaporate quickly. Just before using the aloe vera and seaweed salve, add a few drops of either oil into the portion you intend to use for wound dressing. I usually put five drops of rosehip oil into every two teaspoons of paste used. When I use Neways Lavender Essential Oil, I just use just one or two drops, because the oil is 100% pure and concentrated. When using essential oils of such purity and high-quality, always use it sparingly and never use it concentrated directly on your skin. It must be mixed with something else, like a mixing oil or, in this case, a paste. Blend well (I use a tiny whisk). The oil also helps to minimize sticking. If you need to make an oily salve for easier removal of the dressing, then add a mixing oil as well.

Spread some of the aloe vera-seaweed-oil paste unto clean gauze, then place over the wounds or sores being treated. Make sure the skin surface has been cleaned in advance. I like to clean with saline solution at the start, finishing off with Neways Eliminator which is antiseptic, gentle and helps to reduce odors.

The gauze usually stays in place easily, without the need to use tape, unless the skin surface is very uneven or subject to considerable movement. The wound dressing should be changed daily, or more frequently depending on the condition of the wound or sore. Standing in the shower makes it easier to remove. If the person using this wound dressing cannot stand in the shower, then add Neways’ Mixing Oil into the salve to make it oily for easier removal. Neways’ Mixing Oil is a healing oil made from pure expelled or cold-pressed oils like grapeseed, primrose, apricot kernels and safflower. Buy it here at wholesale price.

Curcumin, found in the yellow spice turmeric, is known to have cancer-fighting properties. In laboratory test, cancer cells have been observed to die within 24 hours of contact with curcumin. What are some ways to get more curcumin into your system?

You can try eating curry and other foods containing turmeric every day. Not a problem if you’re accustomed to spicy foods. However, if you’re one of those who finds eating spicy foods a challenge, what else can you do? Well, I like to make myself a spicy hot drink which is loosely based on the popular Indian marsala tea. It’s really refreshing. You can modify it to suit your taste. For instance, how many slices of ginger or turmeric you use depends on the size of the roots as well as what you can handle. Turmeric has a rather strong, distinctive taste. My simple recipe includes cayenne pepper, another cancer-fighting compound, as well as raw honey, which contains the flavonoid chrysin, a natural aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase inhibitors help fight estrogen-dominant breast cancer.

Spiced Anti-Cancer Tea With Turmeric
Ingredients:
Fresh turmeric root (one or two slices per mug)
Fresh ginger root (3-5 slices per mug)
Freshly-squeezed lemon or lime juice
Cayenne pepper powder (a few dashes per mug)
Raw honey to taste

Method:
1) Crush the turmeric and ginger slices.
2) Put cayenne pepper powder into a fine tea or spice bag.
3) Put the turmeric and ginger slices plus cayenne pepper bag in a saucepan with some water and bring to the boil. Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for a couple of minutes.
4) Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the liquid into mugs or cups.
5) Add fresh lemon or lime juice and raw honey to taste.
6) Drink either hot or cold.

If you’re lazy like me, you can just crush the turmeric and ginger slices, place them in a mug, pour boiling water over, and leave the mixture to infuse. After a few minutes, you can add a few dashes of cayenne pepper powder and lemon or lime juice and honey to taste. This “lazy” method will produce a gritty beverage, but the cancer-fighting properties are just the same. You can even use turmeric powder and ginger powder instead of the fresh roots, but the beverage will be really gritty, and nothing beats fresh, really.

For a more robust and tasty version, you can use brewed tea instead of just plain water. This is somewhat similar to Indian marsala tea, which also has milk added to it.

Of course, if you’re really, really lazy, you can take supplements, like Neways powerful antioxidant formulae Revenol and Cascading Revenol. Both contain curcumin as well as other known cancer-busters. Whatever works for you. Just get those anti-cancer compounds into your body!

I’ve been trying to increase my consumption of natural aromatase inhibitor foods, a really good idea for anyone who is dealing with or has ever had estrogen-positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibiting drugs are often prescribed to women with ER+ breast cancer as they stop the production of estrogen completely, thereby cutting off the supply of estrogen which estrogen-dominant breast cancer feeds on.

One easy way to get natural aromatase inhibitor foods into your system daily is to drink fresh juice made out of these ingredients. It’s the first thing I have in the morning and it’s quickly absorbed into the body. Great stuff. I like to blend everything so that I enjoy the benefits of the fiber as well. For those who want something simple to prepare, here’s one of my favorite anti-breast cancer juice recipes:

Pineapple-Orange-Celery Aromatase Inhibitor Juice
Ingredients (makes around 4 mugs of juice):
Quarter of a pineapple (include the core)
2 oranges
1 stalk of celery
1 tablespoon raw honey
Quarter teaspoon salt
Ice-cubes (to protect the enzymes during blending)
Enough cold water to cover the ingredients

Put everything into a blender, blend and enjoy! Delicious and refreshing!

I like cabbage – it’s such a handy vegetable. You can stir-fry it, use it in soups, salads, wraps, or make it into a fermented cabbage dish for using as a topping or side-dish. There’s probably all kinds of culinary uses for cabbage that I’m not even aware of.

Cabbage belongs to the group of cruciferous vegetables which includes cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts and bok choy. Cruciferous vegetables are rich in antioxidants and recommended as part of a cancer-fighting diet. They are also packed with phyto-nutrients which help boost the body’s immunity system, detoxify and eliminate harmful toxins and hormones, block cancer-causing substances, and stimulate antibodies to fight cancer.

Both red and green cabbages are loaded with nutrients, with high levels of calcium, iron, iodine, potassium, sulphur, and phosphorus. They are also rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, K and folic acid. Because of its reddish pigmentation, red cabbage has higher nutritional content than green cabbage.

The ideal is to eat at least a cup of such vegetables daily. To help you enjoy the benefits of eating more cabbage, here’s a coleslaw recipe with an Asian twist which I just cane across in my local health tabloid. Kudos to food writer Sylvia Tan for creating such a tasty and healthy salad. The addition of shredded roasted chicken makes it a meal in itself, although the salad will still taste great without any meat in it. The roasted almonds may be replaced with almost any other kind of nuts. Almonds, however, are said to have anti-cancer properties.

Like most Asian salads, this coleslaw recipe contains no oil.

ASIAN COLESLAW
(serves four people)

Ingredients:
1/2 head small round white cabbage
1 medium-sized onion, chopped
2 stalks spring onion (also known as scallion or salad onion), chopped
2 green chillies (long, slim Asian variety), chopped
1/2 cup roasted almonds, chopped
1 roasted chicken thigh / breast meat (optional)
1/2 cup water
1 tbs fish sauce
Juice from 4 green limes
1 tbs sugar
Pinch of salt

Method:
1) Shred cabbage finely, enough to fill a salad bowl. Chop onion, spring onion and green chillies and scatter over the cabbage.
2) Lightly toast 1/2 cup almonds in a 100 deg C oven. When golden, remove from oven to cool, then chop the nuts roughly.
3) Discard any chicken skin and shred the meat.
4) Place the meat and nuts on top of the chopped and shredded vegetables.
5) Make the salad dressing. Mix the fish sauce, water, lime juice, salt and sugar in a bowl. You can adjust the seasoning to suit your taste. Add to the coleslaw and toss well.
6) Serve as a healthy main course, a side dish, or as a fresh salad to go with an Asian meal.
